If you got this far in the listings and still didn’t find the dance you were looking for, try:
Use the Dance Gypsy Power Search tool:
The Dance Gypsy apologizes for being down again. This is the second time in as many months that attacks by malevolent software have brought down the Dance Gypsy site. In this case there seems to be no damage to any of the actual DG pages, but the server was being used for mass mailings of spamware, so it had to be brought down. Fortunately this time we were back up in less than 12 hours
All seems well now.We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope it does not happen again. Please let us know if you experience any problems with the site.

On the 25th of January, the Dance Gypsy was attacked by a variation of the Gumblar malware (Geek-Speek for *bad intentioned software*. This malware corrupted over 1000 files within the DG site ... and it did it in a way that could make DG users unwilling participants in the propagation of this malware. It inserted a reference to the site:
the-kapita
which would get opened when users accessed certain Dance Gypsy pages.
The site was fully down for al most 3 days.I believe all files have now been repaired or replaced -- with the exception of user uploads of music or pictures -- and the site is now open for business as usual.
I want to thank the two alert users who noticed the problem within a few hours of each other. the double notification convinced me there was indeed a real problem. They in turn were warned by their Safari browsers of the presence of the malware ( so i guess that is a good reason to use safari).
If any if you users see any further abnormalities (including references to the-kapita) or warnings from your browser, please let me know so i can take further preventative action.

I'm relatively new to the dance community, but I'd like to make some observations known. There are some tenets that I believe are essential to dancing.
1. Communication
No one can read minds. Not everyone is adept at interpreting a gesture. Communication is key to avoiding misunderstandings; Calm, rational speech is the best way to let your feelings and concerns be known.
2. Honesty
Truth is an amazing thing. To tell a falsehood is to invite people to question your character, and there is no easier way to earn someone's animosity than to lie to them.
3. Respect
Respect is acknowledgement of differences, being flexible enough to reach compromises, not pressing when told "no", listening to what others have to say, and apologizing when wrong.
4. One Unit Discourse
You and your partner are two halves of one unit, moving within the dance. Therefore, all communication should be done with your partner. TALK TO THEM! As rational humans, they'll listen! Let your partner know your needs and feelings, to their face, before the dance begins. This will circumvent most problems that could arise, and will make the dance easier for everyone.
5. Letting Go
Learn to let things go. If something happened in the past, it should stay there, and not be resurrected at the first sign of problems. Holding onto a grudge is petty and, more importantly, a drain on energy that could be used for dancing.
6. Variety Needed
Imagine for a moment that everyone in the hall used the same style of dance. Everyone danced the same way, all the time. Imagine doing the same thing over, and over, and over, because no one did anything different. Dancing would be boring! Variety is the spice of life, and we need variety in the dance as well, or it would lose one of the qualities that make it so enjoyable.
All these things need to work are common sense, and common courtesy. Let's get back to these tenets and move forward as a community.

I just got the sad news that Kerry Elkin died this morning.
Apparently he left the world peacefully, and without a struggle.
It was my honor to play with Kerry for about a decade. He was certainly one of the greatest contra dance fiddlers ever, and from my more recent conversations with people, I have also come to realize that he was a great teacher, and influenced many aspiring fiddlers.
It was known that Kerry would not play again -- his MS had progressed rapidly over the last couple of years. He was able to express his appreciation for the outpouring of support, and I believe he was still living within music, as well as music living within him. And I can now imagine that he has become some great heavenly bow, freely dancing across the strings of the cosmos.
Gordon
Kerry's website, www.kerryelkin.com , will be updated soon with more information. Meanwhile, remembrances can be added to the Comments page, which already contains many comments submitted over the last year that Kerry was able to read.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but the weather and condition of the park leave us no choice. Instructor: Joshua Boraz.
Venue: Richard W. Black Center: 48 Lebanon Street, Hanover, NH, 03755

Cost: $10 per person per session or $85 for 10 sessions

This Saturday, May 9 – the day before Mother’s Day! – at 7:30 at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 12 Elm Street, Exeter, NH, we will add a little Maypole and a little Morris to our dancing. Weave the ribbons and raise the sticks with us. Everyone welcome. We will dance the rest of the evening away with dances mostly in the 300 plus year old New England Tradition of Contra Dancing. All dances taught. Even beginners enjoy themselves at once! So bring all the left feet you can find, a desert, a flower or a partner if you like – or all three and join us. Or come alone; plenty of folks do. Bring a flower for a mom there. And don’t forget our contest: id the flowers and birds on our current poster and get a free ticket for next month. Dance listings in the Dance Gypsy have been reformatted -- Why?
It is the confluence of several transitions. As the Dance Gypsy lists progressively more events, unrestricted (or slightly restricted) searches return correspondingly more events, resulting in longer and longer displays.
At the same time, dancers have asked for additional details -- making each individual listing longer (and making specific details harder to find)
Thus the new format -- actually it is a dual format: a short form and a long form. the short-form contains only the highlights -- the items that help you decide if you are interested in this event (things like: who is playing ?or how far away is it?).
The longer form includes the details that you may or may not care about, especially if you are not interested (These would include exact venue, price, contact information, etc.).
The best aspect if that you can have it both ways: initially you see the short form (just the highlights). But you can see the long form in any of several ways:
- move the mouse over an event description and the description expands to include all details, for as long as the mouse stays there.
- want that event to stay expanded while you look at some other events? Just click on the event description. It will stay expanded until you click there again.
- Do you prefer the long form always? Just click the "expand all" check-box at the top of the list.
This format means that you can now see more information -- but in less total space. For example one test listing of 200 events requires 25 windows-full to see it all. But in the compressed form only 9 windows-full were needed.

As many of you have noticed, the Dance Gypsy news has been the frequent target of spam advertisers. This service was designed to be a simple fast method for dancers to publish news relevant to the dancer-community. Unfortunately, far too many spammers have seen it as an opportunity to publish their own advertisements on the home page of the Dance Gypsy. Therefor the tools for updating your news items have moved.
Dancer-created news is still a free service and is still open to any user of the Dance Gypsy. The difference is that you will now register as a Dance Gypsy user (the same as dancers who wish to update information about their dance or performer listings). There is no charge, but there will be an extra step: you will need to log into the Dance Gypsy. (If you are not a registered user you will also need to register).
I am sorry for the inconvenience. Alas, manually deleting the results of the work of these spammers it getting to me.

The Dance Gypsy is happy to announce that it will now provide listings for weekly/monthly dances for the entire US and Canada. In fact, it will accept listings for other countries too.
The DG has often seemed a little schizophrenic to some: we have listed world wide festivals and special events, but only listed weekly and monthly dances that were in (or near) New England. This is of course a result of history: when the DG was a paper publication there were two publications teh Dance Gypsy (for New England) and the Summer Planner (nationwide) ... but that is now past tense.
But that is all changed: now search for regular dances -- just like festivals and performers in any location. This is all made possible by the new Direct User Update tools. It will of course take a little time for other regions to fill in, but there already events listed as far away as British Columbia and Nevada.
There is no difference in appearance... just results.

Yes, the Dance Gypsy “Dance Junque” Store has returned. (Actually it never went away -- but the byte goblins did eat up the link to it, so it might as well have gone... either way, it is back and available).
At the “Dance Junque” Store you can buy dance clothing and other items such as travel mugs useful for dancers. Available items range from humor only a dancer would understand to simple proclamations of your Dance Gypsy status.
And, yes, a portion of the sales price goes to help support the Dance Gypsy.

Contra dances in NH have been a major casualty of the recent ice storm. The Nelson dance tonight has been cancelled, and so has the Gilmanton dance featuring Swallowtail. Checking to see if a dance is happening tonight is recommended. The organizers may be without power and unable to spread the word about a cancellation themselves.

Organizers of special events may now create, update or change the listings for their events. This has several advantages for the organizer and his/her event:
- this is much faster. Updates take effect immediately (in fact you can even see them while you are updating). You no longer have to wait in the queue for the Dance Gypsy to update you event. This is especially important for as the time for your event gets close. Probably in less time than it used to take to just to send the email with the information.
- Make it the way you like it. Enter the information, see how it is displayed and change it to suit your needs.
- Provide more information. Because you do it yourself, the listing can contain more information than if the DG creates the listing.
You an specify event name, description, performers, location, venue, price, date, time, status as an annual event, special requirements (e.g. soft-soled shoes, registration deadline), current status(e.g. wait list, full), contact person, contact information (email, phone, web), price, dance style and more.
Plus you can take advantage of the existing Dance Gypsy data base to help build your listing > for example, there is a good chance we already know about your venue -- just select it from our list and we fill in the address etc. And if you misspell your performer's name, we can often discover that too. If you held the event last year you can simply change the event for next year (we will probably even fill in your new dates correctly).
It is easy to use. All you need to do is sign in to your user account, and start editing. This is the 3rd set of user capabilities to be released (after individual performer and band update pages). And there are two more to go: dance series updates and organization updates...
I hope you all enjoy these new tools

After too much delay, the new Dance Gypsy Menu bars finally work properly on that most deadly combination: Internet explorer running on Windows OS. At least as far as I can tell, they do. The ugly disappearing menus problem seems to be completely gone. Several of you complained about this and I apologize for the delay in fixing it...
On the positive side, the menu bars have now been tested on Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, Netscape and Opera and using both Mac OS 10 and Windows Vista (where browsers exist). I think I am now free to move on to other problems
If you see any further problems please do let me know...
Of course, obsolete versions of operating systems will still have problems: I know that MSIE v. 5 does not work. nor does FireFox v.1 or opera v.3... but I doubt hat anyone is using any of those these days. The most likely remaining problem browser is Internet explorer v.6.0. Although I am aware that a non-trivial number of people still use that browser in spite of its age -- I am not even able to get a copy to test it (MS no longer supports it). If you still use that version and see problem, do let me know, but I probably will not be able to fix it. I normally do not like this (non)solution, but the best I can suggest in that case is: use a different browser, or perhaps get a more recent release of MSIE.

The Dance Gypsy is happy to announce that at long last, its "band information page" is ready for use. Like the "individual performer page", this tool allows representatives of bands to update their own band information listing. You or another member of the band can sign in and provide or update:
- band name
- any aliases or other names you may be known by
- contact and location information
- a designated contact person
- types of dances you play for
- general description of the band
- band members (and what they play)
- picture of the band
- sample of your music
- list of your recordings
You may even designate who is allowed to update your pages in the future.
To use these tools, simply:
- log into the Dance Gypsy User pages:
http://thedanceGypsy.com/users
- make sure your personal page indicates that you are in the band
- go to the Band Information page and update
This has many advantages over the way you have may done this in the past (e.g., writing to me and asking me to make the change):
- much faster (instant, rather than waiting for me to get around to it)
- more accurate (your wording, not mine)
- and some additional features such as the pictures.
Use the same ID/password you use for your own information page. If I sent you registration information already (most of you), use that same information. If I have not sent you that information, you may register yourself when you first log in.
Of course your can still ask me to do basic updates, but I'm sure you will find this both easier, faster and more accurate), and it is the only way to add general description, music or pictures.

The Dance Gypsy has significantly upgraded its geographical locating tools. There is no difference in the appearance of the maps, but we finally bit the bullet and acquired two new complete sets of geographic location co-ordinates. Most significantly, Canadian locations are now fully supported. Dancers will see this in two ways:
- Canadian dancers can now search for events near their home (or other location) no matter where they are in Canada. Search by either postal code or city/province.
- All dancers can find find events in the Dance Gypsy data base, whether located in the US or Canada.
- Unlike Homeland security, all Dance Gypsy geographic searches are border-insensitive, meaning that a search for, say, dances within 100 miles of Toronto will also find Buffalo and Rochester dances, and vice versa.
- Searches for musicians and bands are similarly supported
- There is some limited support for both dancers and events in other countries worldwide (but not enough to be your primary dance tool outside of North America).
- and while we were at it, we fixed some existing bugs in the search tools. Hopefully fewer of those "but that really is a legal postal code" errors.
Canadian events have always been listed... they have just been hard to find. This should make it much easier to find them.
Happy dancing

Unfortunately this news box can be used for sad as well as good news... we received this letter today from Marcie Van Cleave at the folk arts center:
Marianne Taylor died today, Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 3:20pm.
Those words are as difficult for me to type as they are for you to read.
But she is in a better place now - no doubt already forming a longways set (undoubtedly improper) with those who have gone before her: her daughter Joanna, Conny, Ted Sannella, Dick Crum, John Langstaff and others. She is free of the cancer which demolished her body, but never her spirit, and she is smiling from ear to ear as she encourages all to "take hands four from the top."
She was always one to say "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here." Today she amended that slightly - she did have to go home, but as much as we all wanted her to stay, that home could no longer be here.
Please keep her family in your hearts, thoughts and prayers. We will keep you informed through the website (www.facone.org) as details emerge about memorial services.

Hi,Good news. I will not be calling the dance this Saturday, August 9th. No that is not the good news. The good news is that Amy Cann, caller and musician extraordinaire will be calling. She is from Putney Vermont and has more experience than you can shake a stick at (leave all sticks at home, please), and is a far, far better fiddle player than I am (as I do not play). Be a fan, bring a fan and come out to dance to one hot ticket, and our hot band. I will be spending the week at Pinewoods camp, a camp for dancing fools, learning to call (FINALLY!!!). The new and improved me will be back in September. Come dance this Saturday ,August 9, 7:30, 12 Elm Street, UU Church as usual – and maybe say good bye to Fiddlin’ Silas (even though he may be back from time to time).Cheers, Rickey (the regular caller).

With the profile, dancers will be able to get the latest dance news, updates, audition postings, and technical tips.
The site was started by Jason Corbin, a professional dancer in the Las Vegas area. Jason is a former Tremaine Scholarship student and knows the industry well. His wife, Natalie, is a former student of the Boston Ballet, a former Miss Minnesota, and professional dancer as well.

Saturday, August 4, 8:00-11:00 p.m. (Beginners' Workshop at 7:30 p.m.)
Community School of Music and Art, 330 East State Street, Ithaca, NY
If you’ve ever heard the Great Bear Trio, then I hardly need to tell you how much you’ll want to attend the next Hands Four contra dance on August 4, even if you have to drive a few miles! If you haven’t yet experienced the musical virtuosity and boundless energy of Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand, then hang on to your hats, strap on your dancing shoes, and prepare to be dazzled and amazed!! At the age of 19 and 17, brothers Andrew and Noah have become the gold standard for modern contra dance musicianship, playing traditional and original tunes in an eclectic blend of styles ranging from Celtic, French-Canadian, Scandinavian, Appalachian, and World Beat. Between them they play 14 instruments, including fiddle, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, bodhran, djembe, and didgeridoo. Meanwhile, mom Kim provides a solid foundation on keyboard for the brothers’ musical inventions.
And while the music is hot, the venue’s not! The Community School of Music and Art’s third floor performance space is air conditioned, and the marley floor is easy on the feet. Our very own inestimable Katy Heine will be calling for this amazing band and she’ll be sure to choose a program pleasing to old-timers and welcoming to newcomers. So, come for a visit: dance and see the local sights: waterfalls, wineries, and the Finger Lakes. Make a weekend outing of it!

Between them, they play 14 instruments (including fiddle, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, bodhran, djembe, and didgeridoo) and have a repetoire of wildly original tunes as well as traditional tunes ranging from Celtic, French-Canadian, Scandinavian, Appalachian, and World Beat. Meanwhile, mom Kim provides a solid foundation on keyboard for the brothers' musical inventions.

The Dance Gypsy pages have been reformatted and improved
Many of the changed were "behind the scenes", but some you will notice include:
- Frame-less pages enable you to bookmark the specific pages you use. In fact you can bookmark your favorite search: you can now make the search directly from your bookmark line (see the section on linking for more information). You can also link specific searches directly from your own (or your dance organization's) web-sites. You can even include the search within your own website (e.g., all the dances near me)
- The Dance Gypsy Power search enables you to search many dance oriented data bases in a single query, finding not just dances and festivals, but dance organizations, dance apparel, dance lessons and other dance-related items.
- Simplified query lines for creating your own specialized queries.
- Simplified searches mean that default dance queries can be made with no input at all.
- you can now distinguish between musicians and leaders in performer queries.
- Performer lists now have maps showing you the general area where performers play.
as with any other new service, there will no doubt be occasional growing pains. Do not hesitate to let us know if you should experience problems.

The Dance Gypsy provides this service as a mechanism for you to inform people of last minute changes to your schedule. If you need to cancel for snow or your performers can't show or you have a special event, put your announcement here so that the dance community can see it easily. There is no limit on what or how much you can say. just make it relevant to the Dance world ... and of course there is no charge for this service.

The Dance Gypsy now provides driving directions to the dances you find.
When you search using the "find dances within x miles" option, the returned listings include a button to get driving directions for that dance. The directions start at the base location and end at the dance's address.
The Gypsy uses the mapping directions provided by Google.
In the future this will be expanded so that you can always get driving directions, no matter what sort of search you performed.

The Dance Gypsy has added another new tool to help you in your search for dances and festivals: maps!
Many listings now include a small *get map* button. Just click on the button and you will get a zoomable printable map showing the location of the dance or festival.
Unfortunately not all listings include the map link yet. The number which do include map links should include steadily over the next couple of months.
If you experience any problems, please write to us and they will (hopefully) be fixed quickly.

The Dance Gypsy proudly announces a new service: Dance news!
Dances, organizations and individuals may use this dance news feed to submit information of general interest to the dance community. Examples would include-- but are not limited to -- announcement of a new dance series or festival, cancelation of a special event or other major change in a dance schedule.
Information submitted to this feed will be instantly available via the Dance Gypsy news feed and is readable by dancers at the Dance Gypsy web site or through any standard news feeder such as those made available by Yahoo or Netscape at your site-specific "home page" (e.g. your "My-Yahoo" page can include the dance information. When you need to find timely dance information, there is no longer any need to go to a special location. When you need to submit important updates, there is no wondering whether information submitted to the Dance Gypsy will appear on the web in time for your event. The Dance Gypsy home page will display pointers to recent articles and all articles will be reachable through the DG's news pages. In fact you will soon be able to paste such a feeder into your dance groups web pages, so that any dancer visiting your web page will be able to see all the dance news.
Initially, any interested person will be able to post news articles (although you will be required to provide your name and email address). This unrestricted access will continue as long as abuse stays minimal. By 'abuse' I mean submitting material which is inappropriate, irrelevant or offensive. Clearly if the news feed gets cluttered with ads for body enhancement products, posting of interest to only a very small group of people the service will have to be restricted.
Very soon we will post on the news pages instructions for submitting news as well as for installing your own news reader on your own web pages.
I hope you all find this a valuable service.

The Dance Gypsy is happy to announce a new easier way to access your most frequently used dance information: direct links to dances and festivals in your area can now appear right on the Dance Gypsy home page. No need to go to the Dance Finder, no need to select options.
To make sure they appear whenever you access the Dance Gypsy, simply do a Dance Search using the "distance from home" option, and select the "remember my values" option. The next time you access the Dance Gypsy Home page, a display box with upcoming local dances in your area will appear.
Unfortunately, for the moment, outside of New England the Dance Gypsy listings are still restricted to special events. But you can still use this feature to get a list of festivals and special events.
Also note that you must have cookies enabled for this feature to work.
I hope you enjoy it. Please send me your comments and suggestions.

(from Val Medve)
Very sad to report that Larry Jennings passed away June 29, 2005.
Larry was a Boston-based contra dance caller and author of "Zesty Contras" and "Give-and-Take" (amazing compilations -- with commentary -- of traditional and contemporary contra dances). For many years, he was also heavily involved in NEFFA (the New England Folk Festival). I believe he created the NEFFA "grid", a schedule/program which shows in a very clear fashion what is happening where.
Larry made many more contributions to the New England dance community -- and the dance community at large. It would take more than a simple email message to enumerate and explain these contributions.
(from Mark Jones)
I wish to report to those who have worked and collaborated with Larry Jennings, long-time dance enthusiast, organizer, promoter, composer, book writer, critic, dance philosopher, and caller, that he died shortly before noon, of cardiac arrest, today, June 29, 2005 at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA.
There will be more formal news as the family gathers.
(from: Dan Pearl)
I invite you to send rememberances and comments to neffa@neffa.org; they will be shared with Larry's family and selected comments will be published in the NEFFA News (unless you specify "not for publication").
