On the 25th of January, the Dance Gypsy was attacked by a variation of the Gumblar malware (Geek-Speek for *bad intentioned software*. This malware corrupted over 1000 files within the DG site ... and it did it in a way that could make DG users unwilling participants in the propagation of this malware. It inserted a reference to the site:
the-kapita
which would get opened when users accessed certain Dance Gypsy pages.
The site was fully down for al most 3 days.I believe all files have now been repaired or replaced -- with the exception of user uploads of music or pictures -- and the site is now open for business as usual.
I want to thank the two alert users who noticed the problem within a few hours of each other. the double notification convinced me there was indeed a real problem. They in turn were warned by their Safari browsers of the presence of the malware ( so i guess that is a good reason to use safari).
If any if you users see any further abnormalities (including references to the-kapita) or warnings from your browser, please let me know so i can take further preventative action.
